M.E. Structural Engineering
M.E. Structural Engineering is a 2-year full-time postgraduate course, the minimum eligibility for which is a B.E. or B.Tech. degree in any stream of engineering, preferably Civil Engineering, completed with a minimum aggregate score of 55%.
M.E. Structural Engineering involves the advanced study of the course’s components such as Structural Mechanics, Finite Element Analysis, Structural Dynamics, Structural Reliability and Optimization, Reinforced and Pre-Stressed Concrete etc.
The major job profiles for such graduates are Structural Engineer, Design Engineer, Bridge Engineer, Offshore Design Engineer, Offshore Construction Engineer, Structural Consultant, Forensic Engineer, Construction Engineer, Engineer in public and private sectors etc. Self-employment opportunities are also available to them.

M.E. Structural Engineering: What is it about?
The major objective of the course is to impart advanced learning to eligible candidates in fundamental principles of Structural Analysis. Students are trained to implement such principles through different methods, in analyses of various types of structures, and to evaluate force and displacement parameters of such structures. Other course objectives include developing expertise in onshore infrastructure and a sound background in specialized areas such as Offshore Structure/ Management (General)/ Bridge Structure/ Hydraulic Structure.
M.E. Structural Engineering Syllabus has been designed to produce engineers specialized in design, construction, repair, rehabilitation, and conservation, and maintenance of stability of structures. The course also offers the opportunity to such candidates to academically explore additional specialization in concepts of Bridge Structure/ Hydraulic Structure/ Offshore Structure as per the candidate’s interest.
Such postgraduates can explore lucrative career opportunities in areas of structural design and construction, offshore design and construction, oil and gas sector, bridge design, construction management, and hydraulic structure design.
The course aims at providing civil engineering graduates with an advanced conceptual understanding in, and advanced knowledge and technical skills required for analyses and design of structures such as dams, bridges, pipelines, roads, towers and buildings, transport systems, harbors, airports, and railways.
Aspiring eligible candidates would ideally have:
- proficiency in Mathematics.
- interest in, and aptitude for pursuing Information Technology and Mechanical branches of engineering.
- strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- basic awareness of construction methods, and health and safety hazards related to structural engineering.
- good communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
M.E. Structural Engineering: Eligibility
Candidates wishing to apply for the course need to meet the following criteria for minimum eligibility
- B.E. or B.Tech. in Civil Engineering or attained another equivalent degree such as Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy and Environment Engineering from a recognized institute, with a minimum aggregate score of 55%.
- Students having completed M.Sc. in Environmental Science with at least 50% (45% for SC/ST/OBC candidates) marks in aggregate are also eligible to apply for the course.
- Students in the last semester of graduation are also eligible to apply, provided they fulfill the other minimum eligibility criteria.
M.E. Structural Engineering: Career Prospects
Successful completion of the course opens numerous opportunities in both government and private sectors in the country, such as government departments like Central Public Works Department, Railways, Metro Rail, Highways, Indian Aluminum Limited, Public Works Department, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited, Pollution Control Board, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Water Supply, Drainage Board etc.
In terms of areas of employment, such postgraduates are gainfully employed in fields such as construction-based industries, irrigation department, water supply & sewage, GIS, public works department, pollution board, rural and infrastructural development, and such.
There are huge opportunities for industrial engineering freshers. Employment Areas for M.E. Structural Engineering degree holders include Colleges & Universities, GE, Philips, Home Appliance and VLSI Design Units, Alstom, Defense Services, Indian Railways, Telecommunication units, Automobile Sector, Aviation industry, Power Industry
Job Profile
Structural Engineer
The job of a Structural Engineer is very closely related to that of Civil Engineer. They design, plan, and oversee construction projects such as railways and roads, They create such structures while keeping the environment unharmed and protected. They also design and build tall buildings and large structures that can withstand all weather conditions.
Offshore Engineer
Also known as Oil Engineer, Offshore engineers research, design, construct, operate, and decommission (close down) offshore rigs, which are used to drill for gas and oil beneath the seabed. They find economical and environmentally safe ways to extract oil and gas from natural reservoirs beneath the seabed, design offshore installations and drilling equipment, oversee drilling, and are responsible for maximizing production.
Construction Engineer
They survey the area where the construction is to be executed, paying special attention to environmental issues or government codes that need to be considered, and prepare reports on their findings.
